Welcome to Living Fully with Arthritis. I have suffered from arthritis for 30years, and have had a variety of treatments, some more successful than others.
I have used a TENS, taken ibuprofen, had facet injections, nerve blocks, heat and ice, physical therapy, anti-depressants used as painkillers, antihistamines, exercise, going to a pain clinic, pain patches, creams, and hypnosis.
My arthritis is mainly concentrated in my lower back, and when I used to be in the work world, I was in pain from the moment I sat down until I got up to go home for the day. I had to walk during every break and my lunch hour to keep my joints loose, and I envied my co-workers who were socializing and enjoying the fresh air.
It is so easy to isolate yourself from others and feel depressed about your condition. I noticed that when I went to the county fair, went shopping, or did anything that involved being on my feet too long, I had to make a short day of it. I felt like I was on the sidelines of life, and I wanted more for myself.
I have had some physical setbacks recently. I had some scans taken not too long ago, and my arthritis is getting worse. Exercise has always played a big part in my life, but now that I am 72, pain keeps me from being as active as I would like. I enjoy lifting weights, and my clothes are not as tight.
Alternative treatments have helped some. Doctors are trying to get patients off of ibuprofen as it can lead to liver, kidney, and heart disease. I wear a pain patch now, but the results are never the same. One day I can be almost pain-free, but then the next I am in pain all day. Massage, heat wraps, and taking regular breaks can all make a difference in the quality of my days.
When I retired from my regular job, I wanted to do something different that could help people and fulfill my creative urge to write. My blog is a source of joy, but another thing that has really helped me clarify my thoughts is journaling. You can buy the fanciest journal or use an ordinary tablet to write down everything related to your hopes and dreams. Give it a try and see how you like it. It could change your whole world and set you on a new path of discovery.
