My skin has been so itchy lately. It itches on my forehead, my nose, and the top of my cheeks. My back and neck itch, my legs itch, and I am always scratching the skin on my arms and shoulders.
So why is your skin so itchy? As you age, you may see visible lines on your face. That’s because the skin becomes thinner and drier. The fact that your skin itches is bad enough by itself, but excessive scratching leaves your skin rough and unsightly.
Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers may have itchy skin. Rashes are uncommon in RA, but a person does not need to have a rash to have itchy skin.
Is your itchy skin driving you crazy? Fortunately, there are things you can try that won’t break the budget:
Try Store Samples
Some large department stores such as Macy’s have people on staff who let you try samples of skin moisturizers that can make the skin look more youthful, and who is going to say “no thank you” to that?
Actually, you need to be prepared to take a hit to the wallet if you decide to purchase one of these products, but only you can decide if it’s worth the investment.
Free Mail Order Samples
Who doesn’t love free? These companies send you free samples of skincare and makeup. It’s always helpful to try before you buy.
Experiment with Over-the-Counter Products
You can also experiment with some over-the-counter moisturizers before purchasing one of the higher-priced ones. There is certainly a lot to choose from, and you might ask the pharmacist what he would recommend.

Use Sun Protection
If you live in a state with a warm climate or if you’re just soaking up the sun, it can be the perfect temperature to hit the beach for a walk, swim, or to enjoy a nice picnic.
Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to all exposed skin. I know it can be a pain in the neck since you’re ready to hit the beach, but your skin will thank you. Reapply every two hours.
Nix Tanning Beds
Tanning beds are popular because it’s such an easy process to get a tan. You arrive at the tanning salon and lie down on a tanning bed with the skin exposed in the areas you want to tan.
An ultra-violet light bulb is used to create UV radiation, which is similar to UV light from the sun.
You may want to cancel your appointment after you hear that people who visit tanning booths are 74% more likely to develop melanoma than people who tan outside. This research is reported by the Skin Cancer Foundation.
Wash Your Skin Gently
According to the American Academy of Dermatology: “use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser that does not contain alcohol. Wet your face with lukewarm water and use your fingertips to apply a cleanser. Resist the temptation to scrub your skin because scrubbing irritates the skin. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel.”
Avoid Long Showers
What soothes tired aching muscles at the end of the day? If you guessed a long shower you would be correct, at least in my book.
Of course, this bit of relaxation comes with a down side-spending too much time under hot water can dry your skin out.
You could take a Navy shower, where you climb in the shower, and wash your entire body before rinsing off. Another solution is to take a shower a few times a week rather than every day.
Final Thoughts
Itchy skin can drive you crazy, but these tips may help you feel better. Ask your doctor for a referral to a dermatologist. Do some research on your own about what works best for your situation.
