My husband Mark and I had been talking about making a trip to Vegas for about two years. Of course, covid came along and so it got put on the back burner again. To our happy surprise, we were now able to make the trip on May 1.
Mark gets nervous flying and I just worry about being sick. So, we made the flight and it was now time to explore the city.
When you have arthritis, you need to take care of your health, so that you can enjoy traveling and all the new experiences
We got to the airport early and I had time to get some good stretching in. I am excited to get on the plane, but I had to take care of my arthritis first.
One exercise that I love and it is so easy, is just putting your hands your hips and leaning back. Hold it for 30 seconds and you can feel the kinks being worked out of your back.
Walking in the airport is not only a good way to stretch, it also loosens up your muscles before you enter the plane and sink into those seats that allow a little movement.
Bring Rollable Suitcases
Using rollable suitcases keeps the weight off your shoulders. You may have to climb stairs or do a long hike to the check-in counter.
I like to have the bellhop come to the car and unload our luggage. They will hold it until check-in time and will bring it to your room.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
I can’t believe how much walking we did. We signed up for the shark exhibit. It was in the back of the casino and the casinos over there are so big. By the time we arrived, we were both exhausted.
I wore sneakers with custom orthotics and since my feet were not so sore, I could enjoy more things. If you can find a comfortable slip-on, it will be easier for you to go through airport security.
Use Your Own Pillow
I don’t know how many sleepless nights I have had on those crummy hotel pillows. Now, I bring my own support pillow and it makes all the difference. My neck arthritis is not as bad and I am ready to get up and face the day.
Get a Massage
Talk about being relaxed. You may want to include your significant other or not. We have done a few couple’s massage sessions. It can be hit and miss, so keep looking until you find a good fit. I like the foot massage the best.

Keep Essential Medications with You
This is my number one rule. For the plane ride, I need Dramamine. So many people over the years have said I would not get sick on planes because they are so big. WRONG! I can still feel the plane lifting or landing but I don’t get sick.
Bring your prescription medication, but there are some things I like to take along that you can buy over-the-counter. I have a good supply of Pepto-Bismol tablets, ibuprofen, Tylenol, band-aids, and kid-size scissors. There were so many times we tried to open something and due to our hand arthritis, we just couldn’t do it.
Summary
There are times like today when I am in so much pain I just want to hide in the house, but travel has been a welcome distraction. There are a lot of things to see and experience, and I won’t let pain keep me from enjoying the happy moments.
